Bishop Museum Begun as a labour of love in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honour of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the Bishop Museum's collection of 187,000 Hawaiian and Pacific artifacts; 19,958,000 bird, mammal, insect and marine life specimens; 250,000 plant specimens; and renowned Planetarium and Observatory has made it one of the world's leading scientific institutions. The Honolulu academy of arts This is the only museum in Hawaii that exhibits a general collection of art – housed in a building designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue Associates to combine appearance of a traditional Hawaiian structure with the plan of a modern museum. Over 22,000 objects displayed in 30 galleries surrounded by six garden courts. The Contemporary Museum This is the only museum in the state ofHawaii devoted exclusively to contemporary art. It presents its innovative exhibition and educational programs at two venues: in residential Honolulu at the historic Spalding house, and downtown at the First Hawaiian Centre. The University of Hawaii Art Gallery This gallery presents a varied exhibition program which plays a significant role in providing information about the visual arts in both an historical and contemporary context. The smaller Commons Gallery serves an important role as a weekly showcase for thesis exhibitions, the work of visiting artists, and on-going class work. Approximately 50,000 people annually view exhibitions in both galleries. |
